What is difference between a “signed by author” book and “inscribed”?

If a book is inscribed by an author, what is different about it than if it were just signed. Is one better than another in terms of value?

“Signed” just means the author signed his or her name. “Inscribed” is a short note addressed to a particular person: “To John, who was a great friend during the writing of the book. /Signed/ Will Shakespeare.”. Inscribed is usually considered more valuable, since it’s a more personal connection to the author. If the person the book is inscribed to is famous, or the inscription reveals details of the author’s life or the process of writing the book, the inscription could be even more valuable.

Of course, if the author is completely obscure and nobody much wants the book anyway (like, it was vanity press) then neither a signature or inscription will help much.
