How do collectors determine values?
I asked a question about how to find value on an autographed sports item that I thought had more value as a historical item.
While I was given an estimate of it’s value (thanks) I would like
to know how collectors get the value of an item that has both historical AND autograph value(ie what part of value is historical percentage wise and how do you determine it?
The sports collectible market is very arbitrary in price setting. A lot of things affect value. Mostly it is the old supply and demand issues. More demand higher price. Less supply, higher price.
In most cases, collectible prices come from the results of national and local auctions. This typically determines market value.
Events that would make something more valuable would be, the recent death of someone that signed it, has a team connected to the collectible won a recent championship or a very limited production run that was cut short for some reason.
Whatever you do, NEVER take to first offer of a private buyer. Assume it is worth at least three times the asking value and haggle from there. Have fun.
