different types of signs?
Can someone give me an example of an arbitrary, iconic and natural sign?
This is my best educated guess:
An arbitrary sign is one which uses arbitrary (random) symbols to define something. A sign using written text would be such a sign, as the text itself has no DIRECT correlation to the item being identified, and if someone did not know the language, the sign would be useless.
An iconic sign tries to get around the “language” problem by using a symbol which represents the object being identified. For instance, a sign displaying a picture of a knife and fork could fairly easily and (for the most part) globally be used to identify a place to eat. “Icons” are commonly used on computers to facilitate rapid association with the assigned computer program or function.
A natural sign are things that can be easily understood by there very nature. For instance, a weather vane is a “natural” indicator of the direction of the wind, a footprint is a “natural” indicator of a direction in which to go.
